No The US is a capitalist country. People like to conflate the two, but they're very different things. We don't want to take over any other countries.

We want to buy them. Or rather, we want to buy their products. It doesn't really do the US any good to own the country itself.

We want to buy their products and sell them ours. Actually running the country is a hassle we really, genuinely don't want. We've got all the dirt and all the inhabitants we really need.

When the US attacks a foreign country, it's always with self-defense in mind. Oh, sure, that "self-defense" may be a ruse by very rich people who really just want the oil or bananas or whatever they have there, but the fact is that the American people only support a war that they think is for self defense. The Iraq war is a great example: whatever blood-for-oil conspiracy you think is really going on, the American people only got behind the war because of the WMDs and 9/11.As they finally figure out what everybody else already knew, that there aren't any WMDs and 9/11 is irrelevant, they are increasingly demanding a pull-out.

Some people will call that "capitalist imperialism", and say that what we want to do is take them over culturally. That's not really true; we're just happy to export our culture and people really seem to like it. Yeah, Hollywood movies are drivel, but if the French people would rather watch Tom Cruise in "Maximum Explosion 3" than Jean-Jacques Fromage in "The Suffering of My Chartreuse Soul", then it's name calling to call that "imperialism".

Not that the US is entirely benign. It's been known to throw its weight around a lot.It likes keeping Israel where it is as one friendly power in a region full of enemies. It still uses its aid to help its companies gain footholds in poor countries unfairly.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries it really did allow its robber barons to use the US military to bludgeon other countries economically. And the 1800s were a story of it establishing an empire over the Native American inhabitants. But its done with that now.

You want an imperial power, you look at 17th century Spain, or the 20th century Soviet union, who used military might to take over the dirt belonging to other people. The US has realized that it doesn't want any of that; it can get all of the benefits of the dirt without any of the hassle through trade. Calling that "imperialism" is just name-calling, trying to tag us unfairly with a dirty word associated with killing civilians.

Dictionary defines "Imperialism" as.. Wow, gonna be a touchy subject. Not going to defend or justify here.. but rather an existential scribbling about human nature perhaps.. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
