Would you put laminate flooring in a kitchen or laundry room?

I am worried about the possibility of leaking/spilling causing damage to the laminate. My mom had to replace her entire laminate kitchen floor after her dishwasher had a leak. I have a large kitchen/dining/laundry room area that I want to refloor.

The surface is grade-level concrete slab with old "linoleum" tile on it, covered with carpet. We will, of course, remove the carpet, but I am very attracted to the idea of not removing the old tiles, and putting a floating floor above it. Yes, we did. In our case, the laundry room is an addition, and not a very well built one. The kitchen floor had 1/4" particle board underlayment, which had gotten wet, and swelled.

Between the two, our choices were to completely redo the floor, put in a laminate floor, or buy fix-all by the case. We went with the laminate, and ultimately ended up paying for installation (the original plan was to DIY it, but we ran out of time) it was a one day install, and my only complaint is that we have our sister-in-law do weekly housekeeping for us, and she uses a swiffer wetjet on it, which really only redistributes the dinginess in an even layer. The laminate smoothes over all the irregularities, and we have had no problem with water damage.(we do wipe up spills, of course) I have subsequently heard that many new laminate floors are not subject to water damage like the earlier ones were, so that is reassurring.

I would recommend that being over concrete, you spring for the upgraded "pad" - your feet will be grateful. TheLightWorks's Recommendations 1 lb. Fix-All Patch Compound Amazon List Price: $2.39 the other option..

I'd say sure! This is just my opinion, but I think that laminate is better than having wood floors in a kitchen! I have laminate in my laundry room, and tile in my kitchen.

The handy part about laminate is that it easily comes up, and you have quick access to underneath, need be. If you spill, on carpet, it can leave a stain, and even begin to smell. Water spilled on wood floor can damage the wood if not gotten up quickly.

I'd say tile or laminate are your best bet for somewhere prone to spills.

My brother did that My brother did just that in his kitchen, laundry room and breakfast area. The kitchen had that dreadful indoor/outdoor carpet in it (house was purchased from older folks) and the breakfast area and laundry room had vinyl. Their den, which runs parallel with the kitchen and was separated from the kitchen only by a dining bar and counter, was carpeted with regular carpet.

They updated the kitchen with a new wall oven, ceramic cooktop, new sink, new countertops and to give the whole thing a more unified look, laid down the laminate flooring. They lived in the house two more years before selling it. I think the laminate floor added a lot to their enjoyment of the house, and it was definitely a great selling point.

The updated kitchen (needed it) made a big difference, but the floor was the real clencher. It made the whole space seem bigger and warmer. Their dishwasher was already fairly new, so they didn't replace that.

I have some friends who own a hair salon, and went over one weekend to "help" (I swept and picked up pieces) them lay a laminate floor, which they put all through the salon, including in the shampoo area. It's probably about 1,000 square feet total space. The floor went in fairly easily and, again, it made a huge difference in the overall appearance of their shop.

They don't have a dishwasher, but they do have a washing machine and dryer. If you're worried about your dishwasher, maybe you could go ahead and replace it. If you think it's okay, you could always have a plumber come over to check the plumbing lines, especially if this is an older house.

There are no guarantees about life at all. The other thing you could do to make yourself feel better is to check out your homeowner's insurance and see if it covers accidents like dishwasher leaks. If not, add a rider..

I did.............and it's been fine. I put down a Dupont floating floor in my kitchen and, after a dishwasher leak and a couple fallen dishes, it's still like new. I was hesitant to do it but my brother talked me into it because he has one and I had the same fears as you do.

Now, I'm glad I did.

I would put it in the kitchen, but not the laundry room. Not the laundry room for the obvious reasons: possible leaking or overflowing of the washer and also the constant humidity.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
