In the first place he should never have been in captivity. Second, when dealing with wild animals, and trying to train them against their nature, humans must assume the responsibilities that come with it as well as the risks. Tilikum, should not be euthanized, he should be released back into the wild where he belongs, or retired to a safe environment at the cost of the people who are responsible for his captivity.
If a bear or other animal, enters from the wild into a human community and kills a human, then the animal should be put down. This animal by its act has become a preditor of humans, and is therefore a risk to humans. Tilikum is a captive animal, out of his own environment subjected by humans to un natural activities and training.
Other humans are responsible for the deaths, those whos greed have put other humans at risk. If youtravel to the wilds and deliberately enter a bears den, should the bear be put down because of your stupidity? Ussually they are, and this is adding to the stupidity of humans.
Free Tilikum, hold those responsible to accounts for the death of these people.
Killing the whale for being a whale isnt' really just. It's a tragic death, and I am sure the trainer loved the whales and cared for them. However, keeping whales within smalls confines isn't healthy for them - to a certain extent it's cruelty.
Of course the whale would act out repeatedly - it wasn't meant to be kept in a tank. Releasing the whale to the wild may be the best option. cnn.com/2010/US/02/25/whales.seaworld.de....
Tilikum is a wild born and raised animal. There is really no comparison between Tilikum's case and a domestic dog. I personally think the idiot who thought up keeping Orca's in captivity would be a good idea should be euthanized....kidding.
What I'm finding sickening in all this is Sea World's reasoning for keeping Tilikum. Obviously he's a big money maker for them, not just for the shows but for breeding programs as he has sired 13 calves. I'm not saying anyone deserved to die here, but Sea World had this coming.
Did they really believe this would turn out okay? By this I mean taking a wild 12,000-lb highly social, intelligence, complex mammal. And have it perform dog tricks day after day confined to what a Orca would consider a fish bowl, for our amusement.
