NO, This symptom is more commonly caused by a striped spline on the "water pump driveshaft"! On the LT-1 engine (it has a reverse flow cooling system to improve cylinder head cooling) and the water pump is driven off of a Coupler on the front of the camshaft, The WP shaft is very small (less than a 1/2") so it doesn't take much to strip the splines on an old one! You need to check to make sure both cooling fans are coming on. And also it would be a good idea to hook up a manual gauge to verify the engine temp. The LT1 does not have cool ant that runs through the intake.
That is why it is not as hot as the Gauge says, since the gauge reads coolant temp. M/T is right. I forgot about the drive on the water pump.
