Every dojo that makes money is not instantly considered a McDojo. BUT, most are. I know a few(very few) legitimate schools that are teaching good martial arts and making money.
The large majority of the bogus school that make money are giving black belts to kids. , promoting often, using black belt contracts.... Both those tactics used by the ATA, and the crap recommended by NAPMA are trash as far as I'm concerned. Once in the 1990's The founder of NAPMA called me at my dojo.
He was calling trying to sell me on joining NAPMA. He no longer owns a dojo. He makes big money trying to tell others how to make big money.
But it amounts to doing things like giving black belts to little kids, running birthday parties, and running a buss service to pick kids up after school to bring them to the dojo. How professional is that? Basically I asked him if he was making so much money running his school, why did he close it to push this crap on others?
When he tried to sell me, I called him an A** and hung up on him. It is hard to run a legitimate dojo and make a living on it. But it can be done.
But as I said most schools that make a lot of money are McDojo. Sad, but true. ...
Not every dojo that makes money is labeled a Mcdojo in my mind. There are plenty of poor ones out there that are Mcdojos as well that don't make much money. What determines it in my mind is the question of what it teaches and the standards of it and what they hold their students to; not its profitability.
That to me is the bottom line and I don't teach martial arts to make money per say as I am at a point in my life that I don't have to. Even when I was not at that point though I would not compromise those standards and what I taught just for the sake of profit or to have a classroom full of students. If you think that some of us consider only those dojos, schools or studios that make money as Mcdojos then you are sadly mistaken.
It is what they teach, the standards they set for their students and use in promoting those students and the quality of those students that determines this.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
