Nice question.... My wife and I love the old stuff, and all our shared kids (28/25/23/19) know lyrics that would boggle your mind... Now, we have a new 2-year old, so I will have the fun again: Herman’s Hermits/The Monkees/Dave Clark Five, etc. (Fun and danceable) Frank Sinatra (Just timeless, and she already names him when his voice comes out of the speakers! ) Bob Marley & The Wailers (Already a staple in our home, kids love that beat, and dancing) Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (and all the variations thereof) Johnny Cash (Big time) Duplicitous's Recommendations Very Best of Herman's Hermits Amazon List Price: $12.98 Used from: $8.72 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 11 reviews) Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years Amazon List Price: $18.98 Used from: $2.31 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 94 reviews) Bob Marley and the Wailers Live at the Rainbow Amazon List Price: $19.98 Used from: $8/25/230 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 18 reviews) Déjà Vu Amazon List Price: $18.98 Used from: $8/25/231 Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (based on 115 reviews) Johnny Cash - A Concert Behind Prison Walls Amazon List Price: $18/25/230 Used from: $8/25/231 Average Customer Rating: 3.5 out of 5 (based on 24 reviews) Kids love to see music on video, when possible....
Ok, here's my list. I had a really hard time narrowing this down to five. You did limit it to the older artists and to rock and roll. So, some very important folks had to be left out, but I’m game.
I considered all types of criteria to use when making my selections. Finally, what I came up with are the five on the top of my list that would lead to the most discussion with the young folks. These are the musicians I chose and the topics and stories they bring up.
David Bowie. From him we get some great songs, a discussion of what was and wasn’t popular in music for multiple decades, glam rock, popular opinions about gender, how the visual component to music changed the industry, wonderful full arrangements, and a whole lot more. Pink Floyd.
From them we get some great albums, the concept album (I know other people did this, but they did it well consistently), a discussion of how mental illness influences art, psychedelics, life before "just say no", laser light shows, talented three-piece bands, how bands used to be composed of multiple talents who all wrote songs and not a one-man-show with instrumental backing. The Rolling Stones. Again multiple decades of great music, the first wave of the British invasion, the quintessential rock star, how genius gets license in society, groupies and what that used to mean, what ticket booth lines were like before the internet, who Ned Kelly was, what a honky tonk is, if singers sing with accents, when ugly was in, and just great rock and roll.
Led Zeppelin. Possibly the first well-known hard rock band, metal, heavy metal, movie length cartoon music videos, movie length videos of bands, thrash metal, punk as reaction to metal, great guitar both electric and acoustic, impressive drums, bands other than the Beatles that weren’t limited by genre, screaming vocals, selling out to Coke, Robert Plant giving a horrible show in his early solo career that I was at, how I became a Joan Jett fan because she was so much better than Robert Plant when she played warm-up, songs young men would play for me on their guitars. I’ll leave it at that.
Jimi Hendrix. Excellent rock and blues guitar, electric and acoustic, incredibly creative lyrics, playing differently every time, sitting in with everyone he could and playing as often as he could for years on end, how he died too young and all the others who did too, the EMP, his link to John Hammond and Eric Clapton, and finally the never-ending string of awesome guitarists inspired by him. I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
