A United States citizen gets stuck in another country, what can the American Embassy do to help?

Something must have changed bigtime over the last ten years. A friend lost her passport, went to the American Embassy in Italy and got a new one - lots of paperwork but certainly not the end of the world.

They're supposed to issue a temporary passport, and even loan you money to get home...If they're not helpful, then somethings terribly wrong...

Very little. The funding for staff and resources in our embassies has been cut to the bare bones. I have a friend who is an American citizen who has lived in another country for years.

S/he lost her passport and residency papers in a purse snatching, and the American embassy told him/her there was nothing they could do. S/he had to send his/her orginal birth certificate back here, to the states, to get a new passport - and it is going to take two to three months. Sad, but there it is.

Two can play that game.... Wow. Paranoid of content on an internet site. So you are admitting to following me around, voting all of my comments unhelpful.

Weird, and I feel quilty. I never vote on your comments. Perhaps I should start!

Before traveling to a foreign country you can go on line and register with that particular Embassy. You let them know your passport number, dates of travel and what hotel you will be staying at. If you have a problem with a lost passport or an event happens while you are there the Embassy knows how to reach you and help you if needed. It is always a good idea to have a photo copy of your passport with you in a different location than you have the original.

Plus leave a copy of it at home with a family member. The copy can be easily faxed over to where you are stranded.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
