Depends on the age of the child. My children are all grown so it has been a long time since I have had experience with Amusement Parks. Last summer we took our two grandchildren aged two and three to Dutch Wonderland in Lancaster Pennsylvania.It is an amusement park with rides and shows for young children still too young for "big rides".
It was such a cute place and about a three hour ride from where I live in New York. We are going again this summer. Now the kids are three and almost five.
We do now have a eight month old thrown into the mix. :( Lancaster Pennsylvania is geared toward family’s with children. We will stay for three nights in a hotel there and the grandchildren will have a ball.

There are two I have been to multiple times, but my goal is to make it to all of them. The summer I spent working in Southern california included a couple months spent in Valencia; 4 miles from six flags Magic Mountain. I had the pleasure of spending every Thursday afternoon riding some very excellent coasters.
The other one is Disneyland. We went there on our honeymoon, and then we took our niece down to celebrate her growing to 4' tall. It is definitely better with a child along, as long as you revel in the childhood.
Of course, unless things improve in the healthcare department, that will probably be our LAST Disneyland trip for many years.
