Advice from a fellow Nikonite as you're using a fairly hefty DSLR you might find some value in the words of wisdom of pro photographer Thom Hogan - Serious Support. S summary is "I can save you at least US$700: just buy the right stuff the first time. " Now while I don't agree that you need to spend quite as much as $1000, I'm not sure $100 is feasible.

That said, Bogen/Manfrotto make some good legs, I've seen them recommended by many pros. You can get the 3021 set discussed in this article on photo. Net for about $150 these days.

You could also get one of those Manfrotto heads but I've seen reviews that suggest they aren't the most reliable in the world. You could take a look at the Really Right Stuff heads. Depending on the weight of your lenses, you might be able to use the smallest head - the BH-25 which costs $100.

I'm sure there are cheaper options available but I really wouldn't trust my $1000+ worth of equipment on much less.

Manfrotto I have two of these and they are rock-steady. Easily adjustable and with the right head adaptable to any photographic task. Also they never seem to break.

Gorillapods are handy in many spots - you can wind the flexible legs around a post or fence - very portable. I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
