Are the dominant economic systems in the world moral and ethical? Are they the best we can do?

Certainly not, on all three counts! No economic system as a system can itself be moral or ethical. It exists as pure theory, until put into practice, at which point, whatever moral and ethical qualities are present come from the people who participate in it.

Theory has the advantage of being pure and pristine. Many of the systems in place in the world sound a lot better on paper than the practical reality. An economic, or for that matter, political or social system is a reflection of those who participate in it, and therefore, if the dominant economic systems in the world are flawed, it is because we ourselves, who participate in them, are flawed.

If, as we see, our system has become driven with greed, it is because we ourselves have become driven with greed. So, no, they are not the best we can do. Cultivation of the self, eradication of negative qualities, such as greed, jealousy, selfishness, etc., development of positive qualities such as open-mindedness, compassion, cooperation, etc. , and the proper use of education must be used in order to change the system to a better one.

When one cultivates virtue rather than vice in themselves, they can educate their fellow human beings to also do so. When more and more people start to see the entire human species as a whole, rather than just their own little corner of it, the system will change drastically for the better. It will be interesting to see what form it will take.

I, myself, favor a Confederation of Poleis, administrative units of 8000 people or less.
