Are there any antibiotics currently in the research/development pipeline that may be able to tackle NDM-1 carrying bacteria?

According to latest reports, the newly discovered Superbug or NDM-1 gene, which stands for New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1, has no known antibiotics that can fight this latest mutation of drug resistant bacteria. The Carbepenem antibiotics, the strongest form of antibiotic has been reported to have no fighting chance when it comes to this so called superbug. Furthermore, presently research regarding drugs which can kill this gene is still in a zero phase or still in its infancy.

Accordingly, it is quiet worrisome as some doctors have said that this gene can move from one bacteria to another making the possibility of infections on a range of bacterial diseases, namely pneumonia, urinary tract infections and many others. As far as medications is concerned, doctors in Britain have used a mix of varying drugs to combat the infections, but there are NDM-1 infected bacterial that is not vulnerable to all kinds of drugs. Presently the best method to prevent worldwide spread is by constant monitoring, detection, proper hygiene, and clean medical equipments in medical centers, coupled with joint international effort through the World Health Organization of the United Nations.
