Gidday Kat, Yes, blue ray players also play regular DVD's, CD's etc. But for a blue ray player playing a blue ray disk you will need a HD TV screen with HDMI connections. Most will have HDMI. Your regular DVD's will look much better on the HD TV through HDMI as they are upscaled.

So it is worth the expense. Any DVD player with HDMI will upscale your regular DVD's. I would recommend a blue ray player as they are now very cheap and the picture and sound quality are great!
