Are there any effective home treatments for conjunctivitis (pink eye)?

Pink eye is very contagious, so when someone has pinkeye they should avoid touching their eyes. They should also wash their hand very thoroughly. * Wash the eyes with baby shampoo.

Because you are not going to want to touch the eyes, dilute a small amount of baby shampoo in water, then use a cotton ball to apply it. Close your eyes and pat and gently wipe the eye lids. This might be to harsh for children's eyes, so avoid using it on small children.

* Place a warm, wet compress on the eyes about 3 or 4 times a day. This should be down about 10 minutes. Use a new, clean towel each time.

* Placed some jasmine flowers in distilled water to soak overnight. Strain the water and use it as an eye drop. This is suppose to work great for pink eye.

* Boil some chamomile. Then strain it out and soak a clean cloth in it. Then use the cloth as a compress.

* Breast milk! Believe it or not, but even some doctors are telling mommies to put a few drops of breast milk into the eyes. It will even work on bacterial conjunctivitis.(link for more reading included in the sources) There are some other home remedies mentioned in one of the sources, but many of them claim to cause some burning of the eyes, so I omitted them.

To prevent eye infections, take out contact lenses at the first sign and do not start wearing them again until it is gone. Also, for people prone to these infections, wash the eye lids with baby shampoo every morning and night. This works, because it gets rid of bacteria that lays on the eyelids.
