Commercial patterns are never sized right! In my opinion, fit is everything. You can make a beautiful garment but if it fits poorly it will look bad.

I can't understand why ready to wear manufacturers can get the sizing right but pattern makers can't. Resizing a pattern is not simple. There are several books on the subject.

Check out Sandra Betzina's books. The simplest way is to make the garmet as is out of muslin. Then mark, pin, cut and modify the muslin garment to fit you, take it apart, and use that as your pattern.

2 Too big is better than too small. Take it in and make adjustments.

3 Have a close look at the measurements, be very precise about your size. Whatever you're working on, sometimes the top might be a larger fit than the bottom part. Have a very flat surface to work on and yes use lots of straight pins and basting stitches if necessary.

Avoid lifting up the material while cutting. If using non-stretchable material (cotton) it'd be a good idea to iron it out; some might even suggest to wash the material first, iron it out so there'd be less difference in shrinkage and then pin your pattern on. It all depends on what type of material you are using of course.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
