At what age is it OK to stop sending money in cards for birthdays, Christmas, etc.? When is a "kid" not a "kid" anymore?

I have one niece and one nephew. When my brother and their mother were married and we all celebrated holidays together, I always bought them gifts. After my brother's divorce, and the kids become more distant to me (not by my choice), I resorted to sending them cards with cash or gift cards.

Most of the time, I never heard from them as to the receipt of the cards, but that's not really relevant to my question. My niece is turning 21. I'm sending her a card without any money in it this year for her birthday.

I'm sure she (as well as her MOM) will be ticked off, but I set it in my mind that at 21 they're not really "kids" anymore and I just decided to stop putting money in the cards. Once I graduated high school, the "adults" (with the exception of my parents of course) stopped gifting me for occasions, so I figure 21 is OK for my niece and then my nephew. Is there some cut-off age for this, or should I always think of them as kids, since they're my niece and nephew?

Kids no longer kids I do not think there is an age where as you can say this person does not need a present any longer. You are supposed to send a gift if you want to. It should not be done because of the child's age.

If you do not want to send money, then don't. I know some people consider this to be an age when the person gets married. But if the person does not have the manners to call or write you to thank you for the gift, their gift receiving has come to an end.

This is my choice. To me to say thank you is something that needs to be done. It costs no money to say thank you.

19 maybe you may want to send one of these to your niece. :) .

Cards and gifts I would stop enclosing something in their cards once they reach 21 unless it's your own child. No matter what the circumstances with relationships, it's always nice to let them know that you are thinking of them. They may not appreciate it now, but they may in the future when they need it the most.

I think until they are married and have a support system in place.. a card and maybe one dollar for a treat is nice.

You have been generous..... long enough. Sometimes the kids with college degrees make more then some uncles and aunts, drive sporty new cars and the cash they get inside a card will be spent without too much thought. I would have stopped when they graduate high school unless you are well of financially and can help them in their college years.

I also was very generous with some kids and not even a thank you note. Got tired of being taken for granted. Never heard from them again.

There are no rules. You do as you want, different people do different things & they all can be correct. I did read the comments & this is in response to them.

This is about who you are, not what they are. You give because you want to. Unfortunately, they did not learn the same lessons as you have learned & it seems as though it is not appreciated.

No matter what you decide, it will be correct. They may learn from you or they may not, either way you can decide. Another possibility, stop with the gifts now & resume with their kids.

This may help the true meaning of giving soak in. It is never to late (for them) to learn. Good luck!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
