I've been a vegetarian now for 6 years. I did it cold turkey, but there were the occasional slip ups in the beginning (i'm 18). Major things you need to remember are that because you're removing the main sources of protein (and probably iron too), you'll need to replace that somewhere in your diet.
Whether thats eating 'fake' meat or eating chickpeas and nuts (in moderation cause they're fatty) and cottage cheese (AMAZING source of protein. It can taste better with fruit or granola or put it straight into meals like lasagna...). I, myself, take all natural/organic iron pills (i'm a girl, so I lose a lot of iron once a month...) just to be sure.
But swiss chard and spinach are great for iron. I hope that helps a bit, and good for you. I think its a good idea (but then again, i'm a bit biased).
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
