Biology question?

In cell respiration, oxygen is only used once, in the electron transport chain, and used with electrons(from the breakdown of NADH and FADH2) and hydrogen ions to make water. This is the function of oxygen in organisms, but why is it so important? What would happen if oxygen was not present in this reaction?

It's not the only function of oxygen. Oxygen is used throughout biochemistry in your body (reduction reactions facilitated by many enzymes use oxygen) and as a building block of bio-molecules (proteins, DNA, RNA, etc), but I'll concentrate on it's role in cellular respiration. Oxygen is essentially an electron carrier and donor.

You need both during cellular respiration for oxidative phosphorylation. Oxy-phos is the ultimate process of respiration that leads to production of ATP, the high energy molecule that fuels (directly or indirectly) all biological processes necessary for life. THere are organisms that can't survive in an oxygen-rich environment (strict anaerobes), but they still get oxygen by other means and have slightly different biochemistries.

Regardless, without oxygen, most of life on Earth would die. Cyanide interrupts electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation, and that's why it's such a potent poison. Sources: too many biology classes .

The combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen produces a lot of energy. The cell takes advantage of this energy to pump protons into the intermembrane space. The energy is necessary since protons repel each other and would not normally group this way.

This causes a strong difusison gradient which forces the protons through the process of converting ADP to ATP. I am not sure how much background you need to understand this. The link below has an excellent description of the process.

If oxygen were not present, the energy released from the combination of Hydrogen and Oxygen into water would disappear, and the creation of ATP would be severly diminished. I hope this helps. Sources: users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/Biolo... .
