They can tell you that its possible. I used to do it all the time. My employer was with Bank of America and instead of putting the check into my account at the other bank and waiting for it to clear (you couldn't get cash, just deposit), I went to BoA and cashed my check and then deposited whatever I wanted to put into my account into my bank.
