Can anyone tell me how to stop dogs from barking in the yard?

I know....I should know what to do, and I do know ideas and have tried them, but nothing works! We live on a quiet cudesac, but whenever there is a stray car or a person walking by or God forbid, a person walking a dog, the dogs go ballistic. Aside from building a privacy fence, does anyone know what REALLY works?

That would be our third fence! We had an electric fence which worked, but of course otherdogs could come in. Then we built a picket fence and realized they need to not be able to see out.

I hate to spend $1000 on another fence! I am at my wits end.My neighbors don't seem to mind, but I do. I am up and down like a jumping jack all day long letting them out and then back in so soon when they bark!

Ah -ha..I found something sneaky that works...and it's cheap Spike and Sparky used to be like that...I'm sure they were just 'doing their job'...but it got really annoying to have to keep trying to 'shush' them all the time. I bought two battery operated 'bark collars'...put them on the dogs...and thought that the sharp noise the collars gave off with each bark would silence them... Well, the concept was great...the collars were working...then, Spikes go stuck 'on'...and darned thing nearly drove him insane. Good thing I caught it within minutes. So, I hung the collars on the fence, where the dogs could see people and pets passing by.

When the dogs ran to the fence to bark...the collars gave off their painful shreak. When the dogs left that side of the fence, the high pitched screech stopped. From what I remember, I couldn't hear the noise the collars made...but the dogs sure could.

Well, that worked quite well until I forgot the collars in a downpour...kinda wrecked them. But the dogs continued to shy away from that side of the fence for a long time. You might want to give it a try...just make sure NOT to have your dogs wear the collars...just hang them on the fence.

Maybe, if put into a zip lock bag, they could stay out there safely. 1 I hate to say it, but we have a privacy fence, plus we jump up and down all day to let them back in (they can let themselves out). The good news is that it keeps stray meter readers and cable guys out of the yard. And it lets us know when anyone is at the door - we call it the "dog bell." .

3 Mine don't bark at nothing. They bark at possums. They bark at squirrels.

They bark at mockingbirds. They bark at cats on the fence. They bark at the wind.

They also bark at the possibility of any of those things. So they aren't strictly barking at "nothing. " .

4 darwin: Thanks for telling me about the privacy fence. I would hate to have another one for nothing! Mine do not bark at nothing either except when they run out and they have to bark to announce that they are out.

That is only 2 of them. I have tried letting one out first. I always do, but the other just waits on the deck for the first not matter which order!

Yes they bark at squirrels and all the non-existent things you mentioned. I have gotten so annoyed with them that I have put muzzles on them and the neighbors tell me not to - they're fine! Then they can't do all the wonderful things they do like eating mud and dirt and whatever else they can find :-) Thanks for your help!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
