Can I use any HD DVR with Direct TV? How much is it for either option? (gift - they have Direct TV service already)?

(gift - they have Direct TV service already) My siblings and I want to upgrade for our parents. They currently have an HD receiver from Direct TV. I would like for them to have DVR/Tivo with it.

No, you have to get it from them... because the DVR comes with satellite tuners which receive a proprietary digital signal from the satellites, and its the only way you can get their onscreen guide to set up your recordings. There is a small monthly fee, which you may be able to prepay, but you would have to talk to DirecTV. Perhaps they have a way of doing this, like a gift card.

There are lots of benefits to getting it from DirecTV by the way. While we don't have HD, we have been enjoying digital TV for the past 10 years. And the DVR records at full resolution, so you don't have to downshift your signal quality to record more on the disk, as you do with TiVo.

And the dual tuners are sweet: record 2 shows at once while watching a previously recorded show.

No you cannot but you can get the actual DirectTV HD DVR pretty cheap on Ebay Tivo ended their contract with DirectTV last year. You can get an older Tivo DTV HDDVR but will not be able to recieve newer HD channels added in the past three months. I have called Direct TV and asked and they stated it would be no problem to use an old Tivo DTV HDDVR but they did mention the issue with channels.

If you don’t necessarily care about the "Tivo" brand and format, there are resellers on ebay that can sell the actual current DirectTV HDDVR equipment at a discounted rate and also add other promotions to existing customers accounts. You can get the current model for under $100 in most cases brand new if you are an existing customer. It beats paying $300!

I would add a link but think it might be removed. You essentially pay $15 for some info and then you get a phone number to call. Only do this with those who have a high rating.

There is a seller on there who has sold over 1,300 of these and has 99% rating. It works! The only other option out there to DVR satellite content is to use a high performance computer or media center with capture card to schedule what Tivo used to do but I would not recommend it unless the end user is an IT professional or has video capture experience.

They will get easily frustrated with it. Even then, HDMI (full digital) content will be blocked in most cases and they will suffer from degraded signal forced to use component or s-video as their output/input. Your best bet is to do what I mentioned above.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
