Can Red Panda's be kept as pets?

Red Pandas, also called the Firefox or Lesser Panda, CANNOT be kept as pets. Not only is the Red Panda an endangered species, but also a wild animal that you simply cannot keep as a pet.
As an endangered species, listed as an Appendex I species by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), even zoos face difficulty in obtaining a permit to keep one.

Ailurus fulgens F. G. Cuvier, 1825 Endangered (EN - C2a) - http://www.cites.org/eng/resources/species.html From - http://news.worldwild.org/the-story-of-a-red-panda/ "Red Pandas are classified as endangered. No reliable numbers exist for the total population but it is very threatened due to the fragmentation of its natural habitats, their small numbers, and their food specialization needs... ... It is now protected in all countries in which it lives, and the hunting of Red Pandas is illegal everywhere.

" From - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Panda#Threats "A 40% decrease in Red Panda populations has been reported in China over the last 50 years, and populations in western/malayan areas are considered to be lower. Red Pandas have a naturally low birth rate (usually single or twin births per year), and a high death rate in the wild."

Trivia: In the Indian province of Sikkim, the Red Panda is the state animal and it is also the mascot of the Darjeeling international festivals.

And yes, the Mozilla Firefox web browser is named after it!

You know you can't keep it as a pet. It's an endangered species, as well as being a wild animal. But you won't take no for an answer (see halloq) because they are so cute. So, what should you do?

The easiest solution might be to move to a city where the zoo keeps them. I know I have seen them in zoos but don't remember where and it was a long time ago anyway. Your local zoo should have the resources to tell you where the nearest zoo with red pandas is.

Having located the zoo, volunteer to help. Zoos always have volunteer programs of one sort or another and you will be able to have closer contact with the animals. But if you really want them as near as pets as possible, you will have to become a licensed endangered animal breeder.

There are such people. You need to be trained, and you need Federal and State licenses, and you need to build a facility and get it licensed as well.It will cost a lot of money and time but eventually you should be able to keep and breed the animals. Be advised that there is not a lot of good information readily accessible on line because the subject can be controversial and commercial.

You will need to consult colleges, veterinarian groups, and/or zoo organizations for help in acquiring the necessary training.

No you can not have a Red Panda as a pet in US. Red pandas are endangered because of habitat loss. There are fewer than 2,500 adult red pandas.

I found some place that said you could have them for a pet in Japan, but could not find any back up info on that.

Not in the U.S. They are endangered and the only way to get them is on a black market but you are not likely to find one in America. Just like the giant panda, a red panda would probably bite your face off if you found it in the wild. You can probably get one in Vietnam, but getting it out of the country won't be easy. I guess you could shave it and pretend it's a hairless cat, but I would bring plenty of cash to bribe customs.

I wish! No...not really. As mentioned above, they're endangered and wild animals that should not be kept as pets.

They've actually got long sharp claws that can inflict pretty severe scratches.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
