Can you give examples of cognitive dissonance?

I've found cognitive dissonance a very useful explanation for a lot of behavior I've witnessed in my life, on a personal, social and political scale. Even if you haven't heard of this term, you can look it up. Then let us know how you've seen it play out.

Yes, as I have progressed through my career for nearly 25 years, I have experienced this often I work in the controls business. Just a few years ago, conventional wisdom said that accurate control was nearly impossible and the best you could hope for was rough control with Pneumatic controllers. Soon afterward, the first electronic controllers came out and with a fair amount of tuning, very accurate control could be obtained, or so it was said.

But it was difficult to accept this. Soon, this had now become accepted wisdom and then new systems came out that also eliminated the extensive tuning with self-tuned system. Many people didn't trust them and turned that off, in order to maintain the status quoI think the main result of rejected cognitive dissonance is the desire to maintain the status quo and a striving to find paths to the older and more comfortable ways.

Examples of congnitive dissonance I think if people believe somgtime strongly and they honestly believe they are right then they might now want to hear other peoples thoughts and how they feel on a subject... for example types of churches, and what people believe, every church thinks they are right at what they believe and when someone in a diff church tends to go on and talk about they believe the other person gets all up set/up tight about it and just goes on about what they think adn they don't honestly wanna hear what the "other church" person is saying ( I hope that makes sense) Sources: my thoughts .

Oh very fun question! Most definately! Cognitive dissonance in many ways drives a person through many actions and reactions on a daily basis throughout their lifes... For instance, someone may take home office supplies.. they know its wrong and can get in trouble if caught, but they alleviate their feelings of doing doing anything wrong by justifying that they don't get paid enough, or that there are so many surplus supplies lying around wasting ... etc.Or even eating a grape in the produce department!

Its WRONG but we tell ourselves.. we are sampling to ensure they taste right... then oftentimes not even purchasing them. (I do NOT do this... :P) Or someone speeds on the way to work... they know they are breaking the law, but in their mind they tell themselves its more important to get to work on time. Or even say.. someone you dislike greatly does something very generous towards you...it makes you feel awkward and weird because you dislike that person..maybe you write it off as them doing it on purpose to make you feel bad for hating them!

Fraternity hazing... is a prime example of cognitive dissonance where there appears to be some disjunct between your actions and your thoughts. What sane person would do jumping jacks naked in the middle of winter. What sane person would put together pieces of puzzle with a group of guys in a dark room with only a cigarette lighter?

The reason of you wanting to be in the fraternity and you liking the group of guys your rushing with/for justifies the pain and suffering you go through so you view it as something "funny and memorable. " .

I made a video in college about cognitive dissonance. It's a little far-fetched, but depicts the clashing of two desires: the love for Jones Soda and the commitment to uphold the law. Enjoy!

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
