I don't need to be told to use strong verbs or to be clear in my sentence structure. I want to know when to use login vs. logon, when it's appropriate to refer to a computer as "the machine", how to take good screenshots, etc. Asked by lousyd 45 months ago Similar questions: recommend book writing computer documentation terminology word Arts > Writing.

Style guides are usually created by each company. I don't think there are hard and fast rules established for any of that yet. Each company/publisher seems to have its own guidelines.

Most books on technical writing/technical documentation will discuss terminology and when to use screenshots and such (along with making your verbs strong and your sentence structure clear, so you have to pick out which chapters to read). Sun and Microsoft have published style guides for computer documentation, which is probably the best place to start. I also enjoyed reading a book called "The User Manual Manual", which is a pretty good introduction to the whole process.
