Can you recommend a history textbook for 16 year olds about Western Expansion and the Civil War?

I am a story teacher from England and am searching for an accessible book for A level (16-17 years old) students, that covers the factors that contributed to the opening of the West and the impact of the Federal Government on westward expansion and on Native Americans in the period. I also need to cover the causes of the Civil War from 1850 onwards and to assess leadership and reasons for Union victory. Sounds like it might have to be two books rather than one!

Here's some suggestions. America: The Glorious Republic. -Henry F.Graff.

Copyright 1985. Houghton Mifflin Company One Beacon Street Boston, MA 02108 I know that this is an old book. But Houghton Mifflin publishes the best books on US story and they will have a newer copyright text or a new text book.

I used this book for the last US This book is pre-www, so I don’t have a website. A Proud Nation. -Ernest R.May.

Copyright 1989 McDougal, Littell, & Company PO Box 1667 Evanston, IL 60204 Again the same website problems. Houghton Mifflin published the best US McDougall Littell published the second best. These are 1 edition books, which means they cover everything from the Geography & Geology, & Weather of the US, and the early peoples that live here.

The people known as Native Americans today are actually the third or fourth group of people that migrated to this area. These are both excellent text books and they present both the good & not so good of American history. There are textbooks for US story with Volume I & Volume II.1877 is the usual breaking point between the 2 volumes.

This is the end of Reconstruction following the Civil War and by this time California, Oregon, Washington, & Utah had been settled, though all were not states yet. The transcontinental telegraph and rail roads had been completed. I just re-read your question, you will need one text covering material from the earliest times to the present or both Volumes of a 2 set series.

I will be out & about today and I may be able to get some websites for these & other companies. I will send it off today or tomorrow. Good luck..

Here are a few good books you may wish to look into. Wow! I think it is going to be really hard to find a "textbook" to adequately address all the issues your question raises.

Indeed, I couldn't find one that would fit the bill. I am a home schooling parent and we don't use textbooks per se. We read from a variety of books on a particular topic, and I fear that is what you will have to do.

I don't know if you have the time and inclination, but it may be best to read a variety of books and make your own lesson plans based on excerpts from the books. Several of the books listed below I have. Otherwise, I read the reviews to determine if it might be useful to you.

I am afraid it is not exactly what you want, but I do hope it helps or leads to something useful. Best Wishes. Also it is little known that in several southern states the majority of the people voted to remain in the union, but since the decision to secede or not was based on that wonderful American idea of "electoral" votes the will of the people was suppressed and war ensued. Why was the american civil war an important event in history.

Ok here is the "big" question folks. Get out your history books, what was the turning point of the civil war?

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
