Probably not I doubt it. That would precipitate a fight with the USA and would cost them gazillions of dollars in exports which they need to support their economy. More likely they are gearing up for their own oil wars.
The Chinese economy and standard of living is growing rapidly and their oil consumption with it. They don’t have great reserves of their own so they’ll need to get it elsewhere. That would be Russia or the Middle East.
They probably aren’t crazy enough to attack a nuclear armed Russia but the Mid-East will be ripe for picking when the Bush wars collapse and the area falls into general civil war. Iran will capitalize on that initially but they don’t have the firepower to stop the Chinese (or the Indians for that matter) when they step in "to restore order and protect the people" and grab the oil fields. Taiwan is on the agenda certainly and, the other issues aside, this would be a good time to take it while the American military establishment is in tied up in our oil wars.
Militarily (if not politically or economically) a quick, massive strike at Taiwan would certainly be successful as nobody has the power in the area to stop them. They aren’t building lots of submarines to study the fish, they are to beat off reinforcements who come to Taiwan’s aid. There are currently something like a half million troops, a thousand ballistic missiles and 500 combat aircraft across the Strait and nobody has the power to stop that kind of force if they launch it.
The only way to beat off a serious attack would be to use nukes and the Chinese have plenty of their own to retaliate. Nobody on either side wants that to happen. One possibility would be an alliance among the major powers surrounding the Mid-East.
The Muslim states with their wacky theocratic governments are a thorn in everybody’s side. Somewhere along the line, the Russians, Chinese and Indians may get together to stomp them flat and divvy up the oil fields. There’s not much that the Western Powers could do to stop that..
While they want to, they have the legal right to do so and I think they should, I don't think they will. They don't want to lose the US as a customer, and I think they'd be seriously censured by the UN and other industrial countries. If they *did* invade Taiwan and reclaim it, that would probably be the warning shot of the next world war, and it would indicate China was about to go imperial in that region..
No, too much to lose They just don't want them going independent and losing any claim over them. They have gotten too used to their new wealth and power, and know that they would jeopardize it if they went to war over Taiwan. They can't risk was with their largest customers (USA, with sympathy & support for Taiwan from the EU and Japan).
This would damage their economy in both the short term (war and ensuing panic and bad press)and the long term (showing they could not be trusted as a partner). Meanwhile -- just as the US military-industrial complex had first the bogeyman of World Communism, then after a brief period of searching around for a villain, Al Qaeda -- Taiwan serves as a justification for the continual investment in and expansion of its armed forces. Why kill the goose that lays the Golden Egg?.
They haven't been building over-water force-projection capability(*). If anyone should worry, it's the small ... ... countries in Southeast Asian that have large Chinese-ethnic minorities whose treatment, after agents provocateurs had made them disliked (not that they aren't already, as being interlopers out-entrepreneuring the locals) could be a casus belli for China to "protect" its children who are on foreign soil. (*) and defense far overmatches offense currently for both sides in the Straits of Taiwan, anyway..
1 I think China is cozy with all the capitalism they have going on right now and making millions off the United States with us buying so many of the products made there. If China starts messing with Taiwan, they could jeopardize a good relationship with America and I don't think they want to take that chance. Just my opinion.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
