Jesus is a fictional character that represents a moral and spiritual ideal. The teachings ascribed to Him were taught to children, much as we teach children right from wrong today. The magical, mystical elements ascribed to Him are embelishments to make the character larger than life and to keep the audience engaged in the story.

If Jesus was just an ordinary man with some good ideas about how to live your life, He would have been too boring to hold the attention of the intended audience - children and uneducated slaves.
