Css menu - drop down has a delay in appearing and I have a preloader script running for all images?

You need to execute the preloader function in the body onload.

You can combine the menu images in a single sprite, for example with this tool. You just have to replace the rule names in the resulting css and set the background image in a more generalized rule.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
