Do dogs know not to step on dog poop when they are walking outside?

When I walk my dog outside, I'm always paranoid that he will step in other dog's poop. Do you think they consciously try not to step on dog poop? I know they smell it but wonder if they try to avoid it just like us humans?

Dogs "Stepping In" Unfortunately they do NOT know not to step in it. I own two dogs and I was a Dog Walker. They stepped in it without a clue.

Yes, they can smell it but that doesn't stop them; they don't always stop to investigate.

Unfortunately, not all dogs :( I currently have two dogs: a very prissy fifteen-year-old Shetland Sheep Dog, and a very lively nine-month-old Cairn Terrier. The former would NEVER step in anything that even bore a casual resemblance to poop. Heck, she won't even step in dirt.

The little dog, however, will not only step in other dogs' poop, but also will step in his own if he's not paying attention. As an aside, there are feces-borne illnesses that your dog can contract by close contact with other dogs' poop. Eek!

So I would also think twice about letting your dog sniff too closely... dbrunton's Recommendations The Dog Poop Initiative Amazon List Price: $11.95 Used from: $11.94 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 1 reviews) Everyone Poops (My Body Science) Amazon List Price: $12.95 Used from: $0.88 Average Customer Rating: 4.0 out of 5 (based on 154 reviews) .

I've had dogs step on their own and others Dogs are pretty alert and they don't knowingly step in it, in my experience. I'm not sure they're "conscious" of it, as in that they extrapolate the consequences of stepping in it. But they don't like it and they avoid it.So yeah, I think they do intentionally avoid stepping in it, but they can do so accidentally just like us.

I think it's just instinct. Our dogs do just great side-stepping poops when we take them for a walk, sometimes we're not all that lucky. When our two Damatians and my daughters' three dogs get to playing in our fenced yard..racing around and fetching the ball, well, in the excitement one will end up stepping in some poop.

The dogs don't really seem to care or even notice, but when we poop scoop, the paw print is the evidence. HELENofTROY's Recommendations Poop Hound Scooper Amazon List Price: $32.93 .

I think they do avoid it. My dogs stepped on poop only when they were excitedly playing chase. Otherwise, I never noticed them stepping on it on purpose.

Usually, they'd go around it. I don't think they liked anything on their feet. Even a wet leaf freaked out my little male dog.

They were always picking out the mud from their paws, until I noticed it, and put them in the sink to wash them. Sources: dog experience .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
