We do it all our yardwork. We moved into our present home about 5 years ago. I was thrilled to downsize after living in a huge house for 10 yrs that we had built, which was always too much house for me.

When I walked into the front door of our new home, I knew it was perfect and have always said I felt like the house gave me a big hug when I walked in the door. Prior to this move, I hated any and all yard work. Any gardening, weeding, or mulching I did was out of necessity and it was always a chore.

After we moved here, I noticed plants in the front of the house that were in the sun and were burning up and too big for the spot they were in. My knowledge of plants on a scale of 1 - 10, was a minus 5. So I researched this plant and found out that hostas were shade loving plants.

Our back yard was shaded. So I split the 8 huge hostas that were in the sun and made 32 plants out of them and lined the woods in the back. Well, that started the ’gardening bug’.

I spent my first summer expanding flower beds, creating new ones, researching the plants that the previous owner had put in the ground with no forethought, splitting them, and moving them. On my days off, I would be out at 7:30AM working in the yard and waving to the neighbors when they left for work... at 5PM, I’d still be out there, waving to them all coming home... sweaty, dirty... but with such a sense of satisfaction. They all thought I was nuts.

Now you have to understand, I’m a sun loving, pool girl. Our new house is in a neighborhood with a neighborhood pool. So on my days off, I am out doing something that I once hated with a passion instead of laying in the sun, catching some rays, with a good book.

And it was my choice... even I thought I was crazy! You ask about the reasoning behind my choice...I can’t explain it... maybe my love for the inside of the house extended into a love for the outside of it... but now years later, I have about 175 hostas lining the woods and my yard is blooming all Spring, Summer, and Fall. It’s a source of pride and joy to me.

The one thing I will never do is mow the grass. I tell my husband it will be a cold day in hell before I ever touch a lawnmower... I would definitely pay someone to do that. But it gives me great satisfaction to ’play in the dirt’.

I did my own lawn work for years but my knees, my back, my lungs and my heart gave out so now I hire someone. I’m a real mess aren’t I?
