Do you have big dogs? If so, what kind of dog food do you feed them?

I'm just curious what kinds of dog food people find their large dogs like best. Also, do you just feed them dry dog food, or do you feed them something else as well (i.e. Caned food, packets of wet food, table scraps).

Nature's Variety Although I have just one "big dog", and the other is a chihuahua, I feed both my dogs Nature’s Variety. In the morning, the doberman gets one "patty" of either venison, rabbit, or lamb (they also offer beef & chicken, but I prefer not to give it to her). We switch out the source of meat for every meal.

The Chihuahua gets one "medallion" of either venison, rabbit, lamb, chicken or beef. I sprinkle on their morning meal Solid Gold’s Seameal. Which almost immediately stopped the problem I had with my chihuahua excessively licking his paws so badly that they’d become raw & open sores.

Since he’s been on the seameal, his circulation has improved, and he’s stopped licking completely! I also give them the DOGzymes digestive enhancer, the liquid dispersible kind. They each get different amounts of it, there are directions on each container to help you figure out the amount to give per weight of your dog.

Dobermans are prone to digestive issues. Once my dobie was on this after about a week, her very loose stool firmed right up (feeding her raw turkey necks & bison bones also have her very solid stool). Before then, she was having to rush outside even in the middle of the night to relieve herself, the loose stool would be so bad, and so frequent.

On top of their meal, the doberman gets a full ’pump’ of Grizzly Salmon Oil, and the Chihuahua gets about 1/4 a pump of it. Once a week the Chihuahua will get either a raw or boiled egg (her prefers boiled and served without the shell). The Doberman will have up to 2 raw or boiled eggs in a week (her ultimate treat!

- shell and all). After they relieve themselves in the morning, they each get one Happy ps Jerky treats with glucosamine and chrondroitin. We usually get the duck flavor.

For dinner, the Chihuahua will get another medallion. The doberman will either have another patty, or I’ll switch it up about 2-3 nights out of the week, and give her a raw (frozen) turkey neck or bison bone. Once a month, the Chihuahua will get a frozen raw turkey neck as well.

After they’ve been tucked into bed, each of them will get one Old Mother Hubberd Peanut Butter Cookie. Here are the ingredients to Nature's Variety's Venison patties & medallions. I love how anyone can easily know what's in the food being fed to the dogs without looking it up in a dictionary: Venison, Lamb Heart, Lamb Liver, Raw Ground Lamb Bone, Apples, Carrots, Pumpkinseeds, Butternut Squash, Ground Flaxseed, Chicken Eggs, Broccoli, Lettuce, Spinach, Dried Kelp, Apple Cider Vinegar, Parsley, Honey, Salmon Oil, Olive Oil, Blueberries, Alfalfa Sprouts, Persimmons, Duck Eggs, Pheasant Eggs, Quail Eggs, Inulin, Rosemary, Sage, Clove..

Lassie Natural Way - no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. I believe it is also wheat free. The reason is, my 9 year old lab/rottweiler mix suddenly developed a condition around her mouth that was causing her lower lip to get all gunky and oozy, and crusty.

We had just fed her gravy train and canned dog food for most of her life, but suddenly this thing developed. I actually posted a question on this site, and another one, and got a mixture of answers. One of them was to stay away from beef and wheat.

After vigilant cleaning of the area for about a month, with warm water and wound cleanser, and the change in her food, the condition has all but dissapeared! Thank you doglover and Darwin! - I don't know what caused it, but her mouth was pretty bad.

Hair loss, bleeding, raw skin. All I know is that with these changes it has cleared up. It costs more, but is definetly worth it!.

We have three large dogs King is 105 pounds +/- He is a shepherd lab mix. Dusty is about 75-80 lbs. He is a shepherd/lab/rott/golden retriever mix Riko is almost 70 lbs.

He is an Australian shepherd/beagle mix. I think, given his bone size, there is something else in there... all of the dogs are at good weight. Not fat at all.

We feed Max dry food and I make the mix that goes into it. Brown rice, eggs, spinach, carrots, peas, salmon oil, leftover meat bits, beef or chicken livers (cooked). Everything but the rice is cooked and mixed in the blender into a goopy mess.

I put the egg shells in with the eggs in the blender. Then I add the goop to the rice and put it in ziploc bags in the freezer to use through the week. I make a large amount at a time so I have a week's worth.

I defrost the bag in the fridge, not in the microwave, by putting it in the fridge the night before I want it. We feed out dogs in the evening. I mix what would be about a can of the stuff with the dry food and portion it out.

They love it and I know they are getting really good stuff without any corn or soy garbage in it, and no ground up euthenized dogs and cats! Max is a very good brand. I add the extra just to make sure they are getting the best I can give them.

Riko is a rescue animal who has hip dysplasia at just a year old. King has arthritis at 7 years old. Dusty gets carsick.

Nothing we can do about Dusty, but the two others are doing extremely well on this homemade addition and King is showing a lot more movement now than he was when I was just using canned food to mix with the dry. Here they are, in order: King, Dusty, and Riko tuppence's Recommendations Nutro Max Large Breed Adult Formula (17.5-lb bag) .

You Should feed your dog a high quality dog food. The size of the dog does not matter! The size of your dog has no bearing on what kind of food to feed him.

He should be fed a high quality dog food, as should all dogs. As a rule of thumb, do not buy dog food in a grocery store. All of the food there has by-products, or corn, soy, wheat, artificial colorings or flavorings or all of the above.

Please read this link to see what kind of product you would be getting! preciouspets.org/truth.htm You should buy your food from a high quality pet store. Petsmart normally does not carry any high quality food either.

I have used the following with great success: Natural Life (which was sold, so not recommended any more), Nature’s Variety (excellent and many flavors to choose from). Innova Evo ( excellent food, but pricey), and now I am using Ve Rus ( excellent basic food without a lot of vegetable and fruit added, which may lose some of their nutrition by being processed into kibble. I was using Innova Evo, as I mentioned, but the price of VeRus is much better.

I feel that all the extras in Evo are not necessary and would rather add my own vegetables and fruits. I add string beans, pumpkin, bananas, watermelon, apples to their kibble. Here is a link for VeRus, followed by a link for many, many dog foods that are all excellent.

If you get any of these, you cannot go wrong. http://www.veruspetfoods.com/ http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/KnowledgeBase/knowledgebasedetail.aspx?articleid=67&Keywords= As far as canned or dry, I recommend feeding mostly dry with a tablespoon or so of canned if you like or an added ingredient such as string beans. I generally just feed the dry with some sting beans or pumpkin (which is excellent for diarrhea or constipation!) added to it.

I do not feed table scraps at all! They get all the nutrients they need without the extra calories and fat content with their dog food. If you insist on adding other food to the diet, please read and memorize the following list of toxic foods for dogs: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1939&articleid=1030 I hope this information is helpful.

Spike is a 95 pound Dalmatian Although we’ve always given our pets good quality food in proper portions, we don’t go for the ’high end’ food...after all, we don’t have prime rib or fillet mignon every night either...LOL Although we just lost our female Dalmatian in May, Sparky was in good health for all of her 14 years and died a painless death. Our dogs have always eaten 1/2 cup of Beneful dry dog food in the morning. For supper, Spike gets another 1/2 cup of Beneful with 1/2 can of Wal-Mart brand, Old Roy canned dog food.

He loves the ones with the chunks of beef and gravy. We mix the dry and moist, add a little water, add two pet vitamins, 1/8 tsp. Of MSM powder and empty in a capsul of Glucosamine/Chondroiton.(these are arthritis prevention supplements).

He gets very few table scraps...maybe gets to lick a bit of gravy or a bit of bread... We found a very economical product for his treats and snacks. Wal-Mart carries a dog food called Doggy Dinner Rounds. They look a lot like Snausages...or a slice of hot dog wrapped in cheese.

He thinks they’re the greatest treat. Our Spike is healthy and active, maintains a good weight and seems very satisfied with his feedings. He’s going on 12 and his coat has a healthy glow.

I have BIG dogs. I have four weimaraners and I've fed them different dog foods over the years. I started out using beneful, and then I started making my own dog food from ground beef and rice - but then I started feeding them wellness dog food because I was able to find some good wellness dog food coupons.

I buy my food in bulk now only when the coupons are available and store the food in large plastic containers. This saves money in the long run org.
