Do you prefer dogs with droopy ears (like beagles) or dogs with pointy ears (like terriers)? .... see details?

.... see details! Ok, I know this is an off the wall question (even for me) but I've had the song "do your ears hang low" in my head all day because yesterday my little niece was singing to my dogs while playing with their ears. She sang to the Beagle and the Poodle: "Do your ears hang low?

Do they wobble to and fro?....." (etc...)To the Terriers she sang: "Do your ears hang high? Do they reach up to the sky?...." (etc...)Needless to say, this song is extremely annoying when you hear it over and over (as cute and my niece is), but it got me thinking: Do pet parents have a preference over a certain type of ear over another? How about docked tail vs. long tail?

I know it's sort of a silly question, and I cannot answer it myself, since my doggies are all different (Just call me the Angelina Jolie of pet parents haha). I would love to hear from all the Askville dog lovers! Pictures welcome!

Thanks! Disclaimer: No dogs were harmed or annoyed too badly in the singing...nor were ears tugged! Asked by Michelley 43 months ago Similar questions: prefer dogs droopy ears beagles pointy terriers details Pets > Dogs.

Every dog I have ever had has had droopy ears......... Apparently I must prefer the droopy-eared look. Just like every dog I have had has had a long nose as opposed to a short nose, long hair as opposed to short hair (Mandy is the exception - hers is medium). All my dogs have been medium to large sized. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

All dogs are beautiful to me :-) Their personalities are all so unique and interesting. That is really the most important thing. Their personality - just like a person - it’s not the looks that count :-) Some of the ugliest dogs are the cutest.

But there is something about the droop-eared look that captures me every time :-) I guess I am just a real gluten for punishment, as I seem to look for extra dog hair, undercoats, likelihood for ear infections......... :-) Droopy ears promote ear infections due to the accumulation of ear wax or water in the ear. Due to the ear canals being covered, bacteria or fungi can flourish. I have been lucky that my dogs have had very few or no ear infections.

If you have a dog that is a swimmer it is good to use cotton balls afterwards to dry their ears. Thanks so much for putting the song "Do your ears hang low" in my mind! It has been there before thanks to my little granddaughters, and it drove me crazy then :-) Here are pictures of my droopy or floppy eared dogs: This is MANDY, our 10 year old Lab/Shepherd mix: She is only a puppy in this picture, but you can see that she has floppy ears , one still stays up more than the other.

I thought this was an appropriate picture as she is holding her droopy ear from my rabbit bedroom slipper. She still has "Ear" by the way! This is SIERRA, our 8-year old totally crazy Border Collie mix: She can totally drive you up a wall as she is so hyper and full of energy, barks like crazy, mostly at squirrels.

Yet she holds a place in my heart that I could not even begin to describe :-) She is my agility buddy and my velcro friend.......besides, I just love black dogs. This is CODY, our 4 year old English Setter mix. I swear he must be part horse!

He gallops around the yard at top speed with a log in his mouth and makes horse faces when he is embarrassed. It is so hysterical. He gets excited or embarrassed about any little thing, and he sneezes about 10 times and shows all of his front teeth!

He is a real lover boy though. Just wants his head to rest on your leg for hours if your could sit there that long. When I do exercise crunches, he will lie there with me and put his head on my belly.

Droopy ears, pointy ears - they are all a bundle of unconditional love. Each one unique in their own way. They have a way of working themselves deep into your heart and finding a spot forever.

Wanted to share this lovely poem with you that I just found: JUST MY DOG He is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds. He is the part of me that can reach out into the sea. He has told me a thousand times over that I am his reason for being: by the way he rests against my leg; by the way he thumps his tail at my smallest smile; by the way he shows his hurt when I leave without taking him.

(I think it makes him sick with worry when he is not along to care for me. ) When I am wrong, he is delighted to forgive. When I am angry, he clowns to make me smile.

When I am happy, he is joy unbounded. When I am a fool, he ignores it. When I succeed, he brags.

Without him, I am only another man. With him, I am all-powerful. He is loyalty itself.

He has taught me the meaning of devotion. With him, I know a secret comfort and a private peace. He has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant.

S head on my knee can heal my human hurts. S presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things. He has promised to wait for me... henever...wherever--in case I need him.

And I expect I will--as I always have. He is just my dog. --- Gene ll --- Sources: My experience with dogs...

Both, but natural either way. I like to see dobermans with floppy ears. What kind of sicko creates a breed standard where confirmation to the standard requires mutilation?

I mean, how cute is that!? And someone wants to perform surgery on this puppy? For what?

Obviously, I like dogs with floppy ears, considering the ones I have sleeping on the bed right now: (That’s Tess, Kelsy, and Porter, from top to bottom. ) But I also like breeds with pointy ears. I especially love wolves, huskies, and malamutes.

In our neighborhood, we have a dog with one ear that points up and the other ear flopping: very striking. By the way, I’ve heard a version of that song that was not about ears, but some other body parts. It was sung most famously by Juliette Lewis in the movie Kalifornia. I’m glad your little niece wasn’t singing that version.

Video Here's a video of the Floppy Ear Gang enjoying some carrots..

I am so glad no dogs were seriously annoyed by the singing... ...although I might have been driven screaming out into the street. My kids love that song and sing it and sing it and sing it ad nauseum. .

I have some of each, two stand up ear dogs and three droopy ear dogs. I like the looks of the stand up ears, but I love the feel of the droopy ears. The coolest ears ever were my Shar-Pei's ears which were neither droopy nor stand up but sort of flattened forward.. Stand up ears look inquisitive, intelligent, perky, interested and alert.

Droopy ears look friendly, soft, relaxed, practical and fun (the way they flap with every move). And dogs of either stripe are great. .

The one concern I have are the extremely droopy ears like those of Cocker Spaniels that can require extra care to avoid problems such as knots or fungal infections. I prefer low maintenance dogs so we can spend more time having fun rather than worrying about ears and tails and fur. It makes no difference...we love them all! Short tail, long tail, floppy ears or pointy--they are all warm, lovable, and wiggly things full of love! I think we've most had long eared dogs, with short tails--although our current dog is long eared and long tailed.

She's a schnauzer mix, although we really didn't know that when we got her. She would look much more schnauzer-y if we got her ears fixed and her tail docked, but it was too late by the time we figured out what she was and besides, I just don't know if I could take her in to have them cut off her ears! Yikes!

People get all upset about de-clawing cats here, but no one seems to object to ear and tail docking for appearance in dogs! I guess in the long run I prefer a soft and cuddley type dog, with hair over one that's more sleek and streamlined like a doberman, though.

Right! Like there is a dog that ISN'T adorable! Sorry, Michelley, but you're barking up the wrong tree if you think I'll pick a favorite when it comes to dogs!

I love them ALL. So I'll just share some favorites, and their ears are all perfect: First, of course, my baby girl. Her little ears are soft as silk, and they are always twitching like little radar dishes.

Then there's my Big Boy. S nose looks huge in this photo, lol, but his ears look nice! This is a pekehund puppy.

I want one! It's my next dog! This dog doesn't miss a thing... Bird dog.

Wait! I don't think this is real! This will be me, someday, with all my dogs: big ones, little ones, floppy ears, pointy ears.

I dogs! .

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
