Do you still believe that Arizona SB 1070 is not racist?

SB 1070 in my opinion is not unfair to only "legal" Hispanics it puts everyone at an unfair advantage when being confronted or having dealing with law enforcement I do not like the idea that an officer is given power to preform a stop and ask questions when he only has "reasonable suspicions". So let me venture out on a branch here, a man throws on some jean shorts and muscle shirt he goes out on a run around lunch during this run he decides to cut through a more affluent neighborhood where he encounters a passing patrol car. The officer sees the man running and now wonders why he is running in this neighborhood at lunch when the officer is sure that most everyone from this area would be working or at lunch, he now turns around to follow the man for a few minutes.

The man being followed starts to turn and look at the following patrol car expecting it to pass but it stays behind him at a slower speed, the man repeatedly looks behind him wondering why are the police checking him out. He cuts the cornet crossing over to the other side of the street when the officer activates the lights and pulls in line with the man ordering him to stop. The officers version, he noticed the subject running through a neighborhood, the subject avoided eye contact and when followed appeared to turning around nervously he then made a sudden motion into traffic crossing the road.

The officer then proceeded to initiate a stop. The subject claimed to be just running and had no type of identification and became loud resulting in his detainment for further identification. I am sure that there are some people that wil say that they always carry their id so this could not happen to them but there is no mistaking that not every person has an id on them.

The reasons for being stopped, questioned or detained are not always the most valid but if law enforcement has "reasonable suspicion" as a reason for stopping anyone then just saying gesundheit could serve as a valid reason. That is ridiculous you say a court would never accept that you were stopped because you said God bless you. To begin with you would not be in court if the officer found nothing past a blessing in a foreign language but he stopped you with a unconventional excuse that did result in a arrest.

In my opinion the reasonable suspicion used in this situation would not have merit in continuing with the charges. Anyone that is legal or for that matter a citizen can only follow what the law says and have at ready any document that can serve the purpose of identifying you as a legal resident or citizen of the United States. If you are stopped under "reasonable suspicion" and fail to prove this requirement you more than likely will end up being detained and questioned until you prove (in my opinion) you have rights and law enforcement can not abuse them otherwise you are at Lady Justice's mercy.

If this law was enacted and targeted Christens how many stops would be made because someone is wearing a cross around their neck does that equate to "reasonable suspicion"? Would as I said above saying God bless you be enough reasonable suspicion to say you are a Christin? It seems by a number of answers that many would show ID without questioning in an attempt to "go on their way" in quick order.

I can not see myself as surrendering my ID so quickly. Even though Wisconsin does not have SB 1070 but residents are mandated to carry and show ID, one of the first questions after being asked to show ID is (if reason is not already given) to ask why I am being stopped. If I feel the reason is valid as to something I could have done or something I know that I have done then showing my ID is acceptable.

If the reason is something I feel the officer has grasped out, I would refuse his request even at the risk of being arrested and detained. One of the other points I noticed is quite a few answers reflect the fact that Hispanic would be the first targets of this law. "Legal Hispanics would do what every other citizen", "crammed them in the back of your van with Mexico's flag", "If you are a legal permanent or temporary resident Hispanic with two forms of identification", "and a legal hispanic hands him" and last is "Hispanics as well why should they be forced" There are some answers that think it is just an immigration issue and the law will squarely target mostly "immigrants" but truth is it targets everybody that is in a public place or that law enforcement can or does come in contact with.

Anyone that thinks that there are not some law enforcement officers who will willing use and abuse power given under SB 1070 is mistakenly surrendering rights afforded to the people unfortunately once these are quietly surrendered they are lost forever.

Initially, understand that the problems here are serious: the Mexican Mafia has flooded AZ with fake I.D.s, and the Arizona Drivers License is not good identification for anyone if you are stopped. You must have a second I.D. But in any case, if you are not involved in an accident, or you don't get a traffic ticket, you won't ever have to show identification. Illegal aliens and the rotten employers are suggesting Arizona is turning into a Nazi State of course, but they are not... and they are taking Mexican Mafia Dope Dealers off the streets as well as illegal aliens who are driving, and hoping to score a job and get insurance on their cars.

There are not a lot of jobs in this economy, and they are not scoring jobs, or insurance. And so, if you are a nice normal visitor to the United States, you need to keep your papers with you for a while. You can copy them and keep them in the car.. call the police department and ask them how to handle it is good.. but this is an emergency for Arizona.

The Dopers see their sources drying up, and the dealers see their businesses drying up. Is it unfair to legal Hispanics? If you are a legal permanent or temporary resident Hispanic with two forms of identification, you have the same chance as everyone else in Arizona.

No.. it is not unfair to legal Hispanics.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
