Well it would be good to learn to set aperture and shutter speed, and to focus by yourself. In the meanwhile you can learn photo-editing--Photoshop or some similar program. In the old film days, photography was half shooting, half working in a darkroom.
Photography is like half art and half science. 8^) Today photo editing is much easier on a computer screen than in a darkroom. What you learn now with your point and shoot will also work with a DSLR.
You can also read about photography, look at books and magazines to get ideas for projects, do a LOT of shooting, learn about composition, how to use light, etc. You will gain more control when you can set the parameters yourself, but you'd be surprised how much you can learn with a P&S.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
