Do you think we as a human race, have the obligation to help those in need when the need arises?

I had a book club meeting tonight where we discussed the issues of conflicts involving children soldiers, refugees and the genocide in Africa. Do you think we as fellow human beings are obligated to help those fellow human beings or children or victims of war. Or do you think we should mind our own business and just go on with our daily lives and not get involved with things that don't affect us? Yes. Not only do we have an obligation to help, but we need to stop being part of the problem. The history of Sierra Leone in particular, and African nations in general, is one of exploitation.

We started by taking people as slaves, and then we were willing to foment internal strife in order to have cheap commodities such as oil, diamonds, and exotic hardwoods. People are still buying blood diamonds today, without demanding certification that those diamonds were fairly traded. (Buying diamonds at all is an environmental disaster: the diamond doesn't do anything, it's just a symbol, but forests are destroyed, mountains are leveled, and toxic mine tailings are scattered, all because an advertising campaign has convinced people they need this useless rock.) While we do have an obligation to help, through government aid, charitable programs, eco-tourism, fair-trade coffee, and such, we could create more benefit to those in need if we would stop causing harm.

Even after history has shown us all the harm caused by slavery, colonialism, and unregulated capitalism, we are still willing to degrade China if it will save us a few bucks. The inferiority and dangerousness of chinese products has been in the news lately, as if it is the fault of China. They are not blameless, but one of the main reason we buy their products is because they are cheaper, which is because production is unregulated.

Labor is cheaper because workers have no rights or benefits. For the most part, there are no environmental regulations, so costs are artificially low because they don't take into acount the environmental damage, which will have to be cleaned up eventually, at someone's expense. So, sending money to an African charity while still buying cheap crap from Walmart sould be counterproductive. It needs to be a system-wide approach, and for that, people need to be educated.

Female circumcision. I remember reading an article when I was in college about an African tribe that circumcised all the women when they went through puberty (involves cutting and sewing back together of...things...very bad). A group of people, foreigners, petitioned the government, and possibly the U.N.To force them to stop practices like this, as they were inhumane and in violation of various human rights (death rates were high because of the circumcisions).

The government refused, saying that these practices were a cultural thing, and it wasn't really any of their business. Is war a "cultural thing"? I guess that would depend on the culture.

But as human beings, I think we should aid those in need, not because of an obligation, but because it's the right thing to do. This doesn't mean solve their problems. It really isn't any of our business.

Think about the dirty kid on the school bus, though. You'd spot him a couple bucks for lunch, or give him a ride home, help him with his homework. You wouldn't get his dad a job or build him a new house, would you?

Maybe you would, but not because you were obligated. Because you wanted to. Because it was right to help him..

Absolutely I am reminded of the teachings of Jesus. He taught that we are not only to love our neighbors as ourselves but to do good to our enemies. That being said, I have found that there is a whole lot more need than my ability to help.It is also hard, at times, to know what kind of help a person really needs.

I expect God to give me guidance with these things and when I find that he is leading me to give to a cause or to help someone in particular then I give. ACWebMaster's Recommendations Searching for Mom Amazon List Price: $15.99 Average Customer Rating: 5.0 out of 5 (based on 1 reviews) .

A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
