Not really...but the shape looks like the 'fleur de lis' symbol, which often appears in decorative heraldry. Could the X be a symbol for Christ ...?
Thanks, Jane, it does look like 'fleur de lis'. Yes, X is a symbol for Christ.
I would suspect that the simple fleur de lis and x pattern mean nothing at all! They are simply put there for a decorative purpose. Of course, it is and was expensive to have a craftsman do this, therefore it means that the person buried has a family of a certain standing who can afford to do this and held the person who has passed away in enough esteem to spend the money!
It is worth remembering that in days gone by, (it looks 19th century to me), the church was the heart of the village, its gossip, its entertainment and main meeting place. Most everyone would see what you had done for your dead.
I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
