When I married, we opted not to make the whole wedding a circus, and sidestepped many of the facets of the wedding extravaganza that we felt were just unnecessary fluff. One of the things we did take very seriously was the cake. I called in a favor from a retired professional baker, to get an absolutely wonderful wedding cake made, and rather than the "bride and groom" toppers (none of which would look much like us) we, instead, used doves.

This is not to say that doves would be a perfect fit for your wedding, but you should look into the ideathat the traditional "bride and groom" figurines are most definitely NOT mandatory. Other notes: if you schedule your wedding for the same weekend as a major snowstorm, you run the risk of having portions of the wedding party not make it. Rather than mixed nuts and pillow mints, we catered the reception munchies from our local deli, and hired friends in food service to maintain a sandwich buffet for us.

We did not dress the wedding party in 100% matching uniforms, but left them with a degree of individuality. Some of our best reception photos came from disposable cameras we stocked the tables with. If ANYONE owes you favors, call them in.

We drew from an incredible talent pool, and, though rather simple, the most important parts of the wedding were absolutely wonderful. Finally, and most important: don't insist on absolute perfection. You will just drive yourself crazy, and what should be the happiest day of your life, will, instead, be the most frustrating.
