No I don't know what books she does or does not recommend; my favorite thing is going to the library and browsing, deciding for myself. I truly have no desire to listen or do what someone else suggests. She is certainly not the last word on ANYTHING.

Quite frankly, I am of the belief that reading is enjoyable; we should encourage everyone to read no matter what the subject. I would also like to see Oprah's credentials in literary criticism. Just because someone likes the book, does not make it literature and worth of such praise.

If I decide to read a book, and I find out she recommended it, of course I will still read it. But I will NOT go out of my way to find it. I already have a lengthy list of reading material, anyway!

In general I don't read so her list doesn't mean a whole lot to me. It does however seem a little scary that anyone would consider that the only books that should be read are those that make it to her list, or any other list for that matter. There are so many good authors and such variety of subject matter that it could not be possible for one list to tell you what is worthy of being read.

Nothing wrong with using the list as a guide line of books that are popular to a certain group of people but the books on her list couldn't possibly appeal to all readers.

Not at all I've read a few of her suggested books and they were at best, ok. I do love and respect Oprah and all her wisdom, but for real book recommendations, I use shelfari.com.

I don't read Oprah's book list and I don't think she is the authority on what books to read. I graduated with an English Literature degree (that's my experience). Get recommendations from people you admire and respect.

If you someone you know is well spoken and has good opinions, ask them what books they would recommend reading.

I've read a few of the books on Oprah's list and really enjoyed them. However, some of them do not appeal to me. She does reach a mass audience, and most of her books become best sellers.

I don't think she is the last word on book. I don't think she believes that either. It is merely a recommendation.
