Dogs: Mixed breed vs. pure breed, adoption vs. purchase?

To be honest, I would rather buy a mutt from a shelter any day, than purchase a 'purebred' dog from a BYB. My reasons? BYBs and other disreputable breeders are destroying the reputations of purebred dogs.

They breed dogs that often "look" like a specific breed, yet they may have very little else in common with the breed. For example: I have seen 2 BYB Dobermanns recently, both with shy timid temperaments. One of which clearly showed early signs of fear aggression, when approched.

Ruination of the breed if you ask me. Nothing like the breed. NOT a Dobe in my opinion.

Yet people then see or meet a dog like that, and assume because it "looks" like a purebred Dobe... That, THAT is what a Dobe is meant to be. Yuck. A mutt is just that - A mutt.

A dog of unknown or even multiple or 'guessed' genetics. So the temperament, appearance and breed of the dog are generally an unknown quantity. So the purchaser is not (or at least - should not) be expecting anything in particular.

It’s a gamble, as to what the dog will turn out like. But you KNOW it’s a gamble. I have less of an issue with that.

A backyard bred purebred should have purebred papers. A mutt doesn't, and is of more than one type of breed. That's about the only difference.

Neither one will be smarter, healthier or better than the other.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
