Don't you have a feeling that we fake way too much? Faking smiles?

I agree that people with fake smiles can easily be recognized since it does not come from the heart. But, I still have some hope for that kind of person since even a fake smile could create a positive stir in her to eventually make it a genuine smile :).

The same holds for us...IF we don't feel like smiling...we should since, the stretch of those muscles will make our heart change and make that smile a genuine one :).

Yes, I think we are encouraged to pretend to be happy, especially if you work in customer service. You are never allowed to have a bad day in customer service. It is really frustrating.

I also don't know why we bother asking people how they are doing. Nine times out of ten, they are going to give you a fake answer unless they are a close friend. Why not just greet people with "Good Morning" or ".

I think most smiles are fake nowadays and that's why we notice the beauty in the real ones more and more.

Perhaps it's the "fake it 'til you make it" theory where we push ourselves to smile and then eventually smile naturally and genuinely due to habit. I guess the point is to convince yourself that you are happy, therefore you start believing it & become happy; and only then show true smiles!

Some people do it out of politeness, i.e. When someone has just said a joke that really isn't funny so you smile just to make them feel better.

Then again, some people also just seem like they put on a fake smile just to spite or mock others.

Either way, it doesn't really matter because nothing beats heartfelt genuine smiles and laughter, which also happen to be contagious. ;).

There are other countries where people are more honest and don't smile if they don't want to. They don't always answer "How are you" with a fake "I am fine' when they aren't fine.

The distinction I'm making here is the difference between a spontaneous, automatic smile and a smile that a person forms on purpose to make someone else feel comfortable or to help a group run more smoothly. Smiling can be good etiquette.

For example, many people smile for a picture rather than because their smile reflex is triggered spontaniously.

When I worked at a cafe I definitely had the fake smile thing going on, because no one likes to buy coffee from a grumpy person!
