You actually don't have a choice... If your DVD/VCR combo does not have a tuner, it won't have an input for coaxial cable TV cable. The only way for your recorder to record is through video and audio inputs. So, if you are recording TV programs now, your dvd/vcr must at least have an analog tv tuner.In this case, you can still connect the cable tv cable to your dvd/vcr first, and you still will be able to record all analog channels, but not digital channels.

You have to turn off the dvd/vcr to view digital channels on your new TV, and unless your dvd/vcr does not allow power-off signal pass-through, which is rare, your TV's tuner will take over and display tv programs as if there is nothing in between. If you are not recording any tv programs now, then you won't be able to do that with a new TV either. That means, you will need a cable box, preferably a HD cable box, from the cable company.

The cable tv cable will go into the cable box, from the cable box you use a HDMI cable to your HDTV. Then from the cable box, use S-video or composite video cable, plus L/R RCA audio cables, to connect to same inputs in your dvd/vcr. This way you record whatever channel on your cable box, including digital channels and HD channels, although, the HD channels will not be recorded in HD - degraded to standard definition.

Without the cable box, you can't record any tv program at all, unless, you decide to buy a new dvd/vcr with digital tuner, preferably with QAM. If you don't want a HD cable box to view HD channels, and give up tv recording, please make sure your new HDTV comes with QAM, otherwise, you won't be able to pick up the HD channels from the cable company - you only are able to pick up over-the-air HD broadcasting. And, if you do buy a new dvd/vcr combo with digital tuner with QAM, don't view HD tv programs from the HDMI output of the combo, since the HD programs are most likely be downgraded first to 480p/i before being up-converted.

1 I have Charter Cable as well. I'd suggest you upgrade to a gh Definition subscription, otherwise you will not get the benefit of the channels broadcasting in HD on the HDTV you are purchasing. There is a dramatic difference in the picture quality between HD and non-HD channels.

I cant really gove you an answer,but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
