Have you read the Bixby Letter from Pres. Lincoln to a Civil War Mother? Does it move you?

Here is a transcript : Executive Mansion,Washington, Nov. 21,1864. Dear Madam:I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously in the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming.

But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our heavenly father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,A.

I is indeed a very moving letter. There is no doubt that Lincoln was one of the best writers and orators ever. He was superbly able to pack an enormous amount of emotion into a only a few lines.

Sources: personal opinion Video This is a very good recitation of the letter from the film "Saving Private Ryan". Yes, it moves me and illustrates the flowery language of the 19th century. Lincoln was an intelligent and compassionate man. It has always filled me with compassion that he was made fun of because of his meager background and unusual looks.

Politics has never been kind. He was president at a time of great emergency in our country, a civil war, and it aged him so much. Look at pictures of him when he was elected and again just before his assassination, his face looked anguished and aged.

During WWII, there were 5 brothers named Sullivan serving in the navy and they died on a ship in the Pacific when they took a direct hit. After that the navy (or armed services) changed the rules so that one family would not be wiped out in one shot. Back to President Lincoln and the war, how many letters of condolence do you think President Bush has written to the 4,000+ soldiers that have died in Afghanistan and Iraq?

It would be interesting to know. What I do know is that he never allowed photographs of the coffins that came back nor did he attend any funerals so as not to repeat the Vietnam war when the people rose up and demanded an end to the war.

2 Yes...I read it a long time ago, and still it touches a mother's heart and soul re-reading it once more. Thanks for sharing.Blessings..........Annlee .

He did a great job, while realizing that nothing he could say could really comfort a mother who had lost so many sons...

4 Not really. It kind of rings hollow from a man who kept his only son of military age out of the army until near the end and then saw to it that his son was on Grant’s staff and well out of harm’s way. This woman gave up five sons while Lincoln hid his son from harm and protected his own family from being sacrificed on that alter of freedom.

He was mighty god at seeking sacrifices from others.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
