How are we suppose to win the War on Terror when we can't win the War on Drugs let alone protect our US-Mexican Border?

It doesn't make sense when we can't secure our US-Mexican border. Asked by The_Baron 33 months ago Similar questions: suppose win War Terror Drugs protect US Mexican Border Society > story.

Neither of these wars are meant to be won Both of these so-called wars are populistic ways of building support for the conservtive right wing of this country. They lull unthinking people into jingoistic support for an impossible goal. More than that, however, the take money from useful and productive things like education and put it into military or police activities.

This is also part of the right wing hatred of squishy things like poor people bettering themselves. Finally, putting money into false wars provides an income opportunity for a large number of manufacturers of armaments. This is in fact the military-industrial complex that Eisenhower warned about, coming to life..

We won't solve any of those problems by the approach currently used. Story clearly shows that none of the currrent approaches works. The drug problem will persist as long as it is forced underground instead of tackling it head-on.At least three additional courses need to be pursued: 1.

De-criminalize drug use, 2. Provide substitute drugs for the addicts, such as methadon, prescribed by a doctor and paid by health insurance and 3. Alternative crops need to be profitable for the farmers who produce the raw material.

A border that spans a continent cannot be adequately sealed without taking unreasonably costly measures like building an inpenetrable wall. (The Great Wall of China was incredibly costly and was not defeated militarily but instead by an insignificant amount in bribes.) As long as great inequality exists between the US and Mexico, people will try to follow opportunity. Economical measures and increased social stability in Mexico would alleviate the problem.

The ’war’ on terror is not a war and cannot be solved by military means alone. Failed states, like Somalia, provide no social stability or opportunity to the people living there and allow radical ideas and terrorists (foreign or domestic) to take hold. Terrorism is the poor man’s response to injustice and it is very cheap, particularly if the situation is desperate enough to allow suicide bombings.

No amount of security can fully protect against devastating attacks. For example, we cannot possibly cover every water reservoir, build blast walls around every important building or prevent everybody from building an explosive device (not very difficult really). If we were to try all this (and we probably have spent too much with little focus already) it would bring us to ruin - just by the mere threat of terrorism.

In ancient Greece, Sparta took the opposite approach by not even building a city wall.So how to defeat terrorism? By addressing the root problems: injustice, lack of respect by us for their culture, lack of opportunity, stopping exploitation of their resources. Northern Ireland may serve as probably the only example how to get out of this situation. As bad as it may seem, sitting down with the terrorists, or at least their sympathizers, and talking about it is essential.

I don’t like the idea that we talk to ben Ladin and capturing him would be preferable but it might be unavoidable. The way around talking to him is to address some of his key issues directly. Move troups out of the middle east, stop using oil and leave middle eastern countries to their own devices, while providing opportunity for the people before we leave.

We can do this in steps and energy independence is being pursued by Obama who also seems to know all the lessons from the Northern Ireland conflict. So things are looking up.It’s just not going to be quick, painless or cheap. We’ll be paying for the sins of the past...

1 Short Answer...We will never win the "War on Terror" It's unwinnable...terrorists and acts of terror have been around since the dawn of man...We will never ever successfully stop it. The best we can do is try and limit it and be prepared the best we can.

3 Station troops - lots of them - along the border with orders to shoot - not necessarily to kill, but to wound if they don't stop when told to! Give it time and Mexico will become the largest country in the world to be run exclusively by drug cartels - assuming they aren't running the place already.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest. A good paper is one that people get drawn into because it reaches them ln some way.As for me WW11 to me, I think of the holocaust and the effect it had on the survivors, their families and those who stood by and did nothing until it was too late.
