How can I reset the "power on" password on my Compaq Presario Laptop V5000 so I can log onto Windows XP?

I made a mistake by letting my cousin borrow my laptop and she has put a "power on" password on the machine. She apparently does not remember the password, so I can't get the computer to power on for me to even reinstall Windows XP. I can't even get into BIOS because the power on password prompts.

Any suggestions? Asked by milesba44 58 months ago Similar questions: reset power password Compaq Presario Laptop V5000 log Windows XP Computers > Software.

Oops - you better have a long talk with her Power OnThe Power On password is set in the System BIOS options. It prevents unwanted users from accessing the computer. By default, HP does not set the Power On password.

If you set the Power On password in the System BIOS options you will be prompted for it immediately after you power on the Notebook PC. If this password is forgotten, a repair at an HP certified repair center is required to reset the computer. Please contact HP to schedule a repair.

Very weird I don't if I should help you on this... Apparently you've been bad to your cousin.... so she would do something like that to you... And I hope you didn't steal that notebook.... Anyway, I will believe your good faith: If the computer you are servicing has an unknown password, follow these steps to clear the password. These steps also clear CMOS: 1. Prepare the computer for disassembly (refer to Section 5.3, “Preparing the Computer for Disassembly,” for more information.) 2.

Remove the real-time clock (RTC) battery (refer to Section 5.8, “RTC Battery,” for more information. ) Product Description Maintenance and Service Guide 1–5 3. Wait approximately 5 minutes.

4. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer.5. Connect AC power to the computer.

Do not reinsert any batteries at this time.6. Turn on the computer. All passwords and CMOS settings have been cleared.

Hope that helps, ~ms wizdowl. Com Sources: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00700903.pdf .

2 I didn't tell you to get into the bios - I told you the power up password is SET in the bios - if you don't know the password, then you can take the laptop apart and pull the lithium battery - I wouldn't, but that can be done, as someone notes, but better, since you own it, to spend the 25 bucks to have it done at a HP service center. Call them. I gave you the numbers.
