He applied like anyone who wants to get into Harvard. He was not a legacy admission. He had an undergraduate degree from a good school- Columbia and I presume he got good recommendations.

Obama spent 2 years at Occidental, he didn't graduate from there. He transferred to Columbia, where Brian Connolly was the spokesman. Columbia says that "there are always more students eligible by GPA than there are allowable awards."
Latin Honors at Columbia require more credits earned at Columbia than a 2-year transfer typically earns. This is to stop students from transferring late in their academic careers and taking the limited honors available away from 4-year graduates. That means that Obama could have had straight A's at both Oxy and Columbia and not have been eligible for honors.
His professors at both schools say he did excellent work and received A's. He DID graduate Magna *** laude from Harvard Law School, where only the top 10% recieve that honor. It IS possible to borrow the entire cost of law school, but it's usually unnecessary at Harvard.
They have a huge endowment and their financial aid is entirely need-based. Between scholarships, grants, public, and private loans, Harvard says they are committed to making sure everyone who is accepted can afford to go. Obama also earned money at 2 summer internships and by working as a research assistant for Laurence Tribe.
