Carlos Slim first became wealthy at a young age. Through savvy investing he had made his $40 million by the time he was 26. What took him from wealthy to super wealthy was the 1990 buyout of telmex.

He owns 49% of the company which supplies 90% of all the landline phones in Mexico. He also owns the largest cell phone provider in Mexico and Central America. He has holdings in about 200 companies ranging from telcom to banks to infrastructure and resources.
