How did the Iranian Hostage Crisis affect our relationship with Iran today?

When Iran took hostage members of the US Embassy in Iran, it violated centuries old practices that foreign embassies would be protected as a way of keeping open lines of communication between nations. Iran's violation of this norm was not only a violation of international law, but a direct affront on the United States. It was an act of war.

The administration decided not to go to war over this issue, but it did result in hostile relations that exist to this day. The US still sees Iran as a hostile outlaw regime that cannot be trusted. The American people were ready to go to war with Iran at the time.
