How do I plant Nikko Blue hydrangeas?

PreparationPlant container grown Nikko Blue hydrangeas in either the spring or fall. Plant bare-root bushes in early or mid-spring. Choose a sunny or partially shady location.

Dig the hole large enough for the roots to fit in easily and deep enough for the crown of the bush to be 1 inch below ground level. Amend the fill soil with sand and organic matter if it is predominately heavy clay. Add aluminum or iron sulfate to alkaline soil for blue blooms and lime or dolomite to acid soil for pink blooms.

PlantingLoosen the roots on the bush and spread them out. Hold the bush with its roots in the hole so that the crown is 1 inch below ground level. Fill in underneath and around the roots with loose soil.

Pack the soil down gently by hand when the hole is half filled. Fill in the remainder of the hole, packing the soil down by hand as it is added. Water the bush generously.
