How do I prevent the neighbors' dogs from pooping in my yard?

Several times a week I will find piles of dog poop in my front yard. I know that it is a few different dogs who are doing this and unfortuantely, I don't know whose dog it is, so I can't tell them directly. Is there something I can put in my yard to discourage them from coming?

Some deterrents may not be grass friendly; signs will help Well, you could start with posting a .

You might consider putting up a sign (polite is better than nasty, at least at the beginning) asking people to refrain from letting their pets do their business there, or to pick up. As a dog owner, I am careful to respect such requests. We have a local pooper scooper law, so if my dogs to their business, we pick up after them, but I’m WELL aware that lots of people don’t--we see the evidence all over the neighborhood.

The other possibility is figuring out when the heavy use period is, and policing for a while. WOrd DOES tend to get out if someone has problems with it, and most folks will try to avoid your property if you point out to them that you shouldn’t have to clean up after their dog. We also have a strong leash law, so if a dog is out, he’s accompanied.

If these deposits are from loose dogs, you might want to check your local regulations. Most "off-lead dog laws" have fines for the dog being off lead off the owner’s property. Other than that?

Fencing? Pricy, and not always the look you want for your property! So I’d go with a sign for a while, myself.

Note: you MAY be getting some extra animal waste attention if you have a dog yourself--the neighborhood dogs go along and "read the pee-mail" and leave their own deposits as well. I know our young male marks territory when he sees or hears another dog, and the brown spots in the grass can be just as annoying as the piles. Not a field I want to go into.

Various methods have pros and cons. I have a neighbor who has a fenced yard and a dog--but he uses the fence to keep his dog out of his yard! He has an immaculate lawn, and he sends the dog to the neighborhood park and to my yard to poop.

Worse yet, the dog is deaf and can’t hear cars coming, and they live on a blind corner where drivers can’t see the dog until they are right on top of him. Nice neighbor, huh? In a perfect world, you could simply go talk to the owners of the dog or dogs, and ask them to keep them fenced in, as your local laws probably dictate.

You could try it, but the odds of this approach working are very slim. If the owner doesn’t care enough about his dog or his neighbors to keep his dog fenced in a yard, he’s not going to care about poop on your lawn. I have considered various options, and their pros and cons.

My first choice was to bury land mines in the yard, but this could be messy. My second choice was to scoop the poop up in one of those little blue bags, like I do for my dogs when we are out walking, and then tie it to his collar so he would take it home to them. This didn’t work because the dog is skittish and won’t let anyone near him.

You could call animal control. I didn’t do this because I couldn’t stand the thought of the dog being punished for the owner’s antisocial behavior. Our animal control agency is supposed to have the power to levy a fine against irresponsible owners, but I imagine that too many times they just take an at-large dog to the shelter.

Who knows if these people would pick him up or just let him be euthanized? They make a sprinkler that comes on when it detects movement, discouraging cats, dogs, raccoons, squirrels, etc. I haven’t tried it, but it could be fun. I have my doubts about how effective it would be.

The only real solution is a fence. I did not want a fence, so I created a hedgerow of native plants, along with a temporary fence to let the plants get established. It is nice and thick, now, with lots of thorny plants, so I can take down the temporary fence soon.

It can be done, but it can get to be expensive......... .......not to mention time consuming. Hardware stores and some garden centers sell an actual animal repellent, which will effectively make any area undesirable for a "potty stop" when applied. It can be in liquid form that you spray..... which you can use on specified areas --- for instance if there's a certain bush or tree a dog is targeting.

Or, you can use granules for a larger, ground area........ but like I said, that gets expensive. Especially if you have a big yard. Buying ground pepper in bulk, (perhaps at Sam's club), and applying that to a high trafficked dog area works the same way, and MIGHT be a little cheaper.

Since a dog uses his sensitive nose to sniff out a "good potty spot", and places where other dogs have gone before makes an area even more attractive, that's a great place to start treating with pepper. Once a dog gets a good whiff of pepper up his nose that quickly teaches him it's not such a good spot to use as his potty area anymore. The only problem with using pepper is that every time it rains or you water the area, the pepper becomes a lot less effective or perhaps washes away completely.

Then you have to reapply the pepper again, unless the dogs in your area have already learned their lesson. Mothballs are also used to repel animals, as is dried blood, which is used as a fertilizer as well, so that can be obtained at your local garden center. Once again, the smell is offensive to sensitive noses, and they stay away.

Some animals, (especially rabbits) are not fond of tobacco, so many times tobacco can be used. That too can be expensive, but if you smoke I would suggest dumping all of your ash trays full of ashes and old cigarette butts (minus the paper and filters) along any bush line that dogs are targeting. The tobacco smell itself is a turn off, plus the ashes will irritate an animals nose.

When you're dealing with dogs, finding and applying anything that interferes with a dog's natural desire to sniff an area and thereby claim it as its own is your main goal. But by using natural products instead of chemicals should be your main objective. Good luck!

Well, we have this problem and know exactly whose dogs are doing this. Today I scooped up their poop and deposited it on their yard. I am prepared to do this a number of times and hope they will get the message.

The best thing to do is put a fence around your home to prevent dogs from coming in. Since you can't spend all your time watching for them and keep them away from going into your yard, you can guard your yard by fencing it. That way, they can't enter then.

I cant really gove you an answer, but what I can give you is a way to a solution, that is you have to find the anglde that you relate to or peaks your interest.
