It probably doesn't A chicken alfredo isn’t really all that complicated a dish: chicken, cream, noodles, and a bit of butter and parmesan. If I whip one up for you, I don’t have to taste it to know that it tastes like chicken alfredo. I suspect that chicken alfredo cat food has all that much cream in it and I doubt there’s any parmesan. It looks like chicken alfredo, but made out of whatever ingredients the nutritionists want your cat to have, and whatever look the food chemists can create.

But that look is for your benefit, not the cat’s. If there are noodles in it, they’re nothing like the noodles you eat, since they’re not very good for kitties. Besides, it’s not like the cat was craving your chicken alfredo at the table and was hoping to get some for itself.

And it's not like the owners are going taste it themselves. I suspect the researchers who developed it probably took a taste of it at some point, because it’s really not all that different from human food. But it doesn’t really matter if the humans like it.

They feed it to some cats, and if the cats like it, they sell it. But before they do, they show it to the humans. The humans don’t eat it, but they do say if they think they’d be more likely to buy a "chicken alfredo" for their cats if it looks like that.

If it doesn’t look the part, they send it back to the lab. The pet food game is all about creating things that the humans like as well as the pets..

I mean, we all taste things differently. Brussel Sprouts are a perfect example. I love em.

Lots of people hate em. And it has nothing to do with genetics because my son can't get one in his mouth without wretching. Since odor is the bigger part of "taste" in humans, our concept of how those treats "taste" is based on how they "smell" and I must admit, they certainly DO smell like what they're supposed to be.

I doubt they have taste tests -- with animals or humans -- although I can think of a couple people I'd volunteer for that. Have you taken a good smell of these things? There's so much they can do now with chemical enhancers for taste and smell.

I'm sure they can make it smell like anything. I question sometimes what dogs (or cats) can actually taste and what do they think tastes good? I have watched dogs eat dead things in the street -- that can't "taste" good.

But they seem to enjoy it. I've seen a cat devour a whole chipmunk -- not my idea of gourmet food. But they certainly have preferences!

I bought a big bag of treats for my dog (different from what I usually buy because they were on sale) and she wouldn't TOUCH them. I kept trying to give them to her different ways. Even crunched some up in her regular food.

She avoided most of the treat chunks. I wondered if it was taste or texture or smell or?.

1 They ask the cats, of course. Here's how it works:They assemble a focus group of 10-15 different breeds of cat, feed them each a restaurant entree, then a dish of the subject cat food version. The cats then complete a brief questionaire, collect their $25 and leave.
