How do scientists know that chlorine is responsible for stratospheric ozone depletion?

In 1987, NASA and a group of scientists flew a modified U-2 spy plane (now called the ER-2) into the ozone hole over Antarctica. During this flight they found that as they entered the hole chlorine compounds went up at exactly the same time that ozone decreased.
